So the lying wabbott would not have apologised but for Labour's official censure motion .... Julia Gillard spoke to the motion brilliantly, significantly embarrassing the wabbott who thought it was all so funny to be stigmatizing mentally ill people especially where he is the responsible minister.

Our piece of rubbish pm couldn't see his own double standards but this is unsurprising. He just feels he can anything with impunity these days while all the chumps lap it up.

PM backs Abbott despite Brogden joke

Prime Minister John Howard has acknowledged a joke made by his Health Minister about the attempted suicide of the former Liberal leader in New South Wales was wrong.

Hours after John Brogden tried to take his own life, Tony Abbott said a particular health proposal "would be as dead as Mr Brogden's political prospects".

Some Liberal backbenchers have described the remarks as disgusting.

Mr Howard says the joke was wrong.

"Mr Abbott the Minister for Health and Ageing, has apologised for his remarks," Mr Howard said.

"He continues to enjoy my full confidence."

In Parliament, Mr Abbott offered an unconditional apology.

"I do accept that the statements I made are insensitive and, Mr Speaker, I am sorry for them," he said.

Mr Abbott says the comments were insensitive, inappropriate and should not have been made.

He says he has tried to apologise to Mr Brogden and people have a right to be annoyed that he made light of Mr Brogden's problems.

"I am very sorry that I have given offence to the former leader of the Opposition in New South Wales," he said.

"I am very sorry that I have given offence to some of my own colleagues, I am very sorry even that I have given offence to members opposite, Mr Speaker.

"Let me simply say I'm certainly not a perfect human being."

Labor leader Kim Beazley has called on Mr Abbott to resign.

"He should go, he should do the right thing," he said.

Mr Beazley is demanding the Prime Minister sack the minister who is responsible for mental health issues.

Labor moved to censure the minister.
