I still think this is worth investing in, and in many ways most R&D activities always carry an element of risk. Hence why I refer to the marathon race as a comparison.
If you look at the Apollo space program as well, there was several activities which resulted in accidents and mishaps, but through perseverance and good governance they put a men on the moon and returned to earth.
