If Abbott conceded to the Malaysian solution it would go through and ...

Half the Labor party hate the idea and would then call a spill on the nasty Gillard once she screws the process up.

Gillard would be removed and the new Labor leader would condemn the policy and make Abbott out to be the nasty man who allowed such a horrible policy through when he had the power to stop it.

They would say all the usual tripe and get back on their soap box of high morality.

If anyone truly believes the Malaysian solution would work then they would be wise not to risk it's implementation to a party half full of die hard lefties and a party with multiple policy failures in this area.

Labor are playing politics with the Malaysian solution ... the very fact that they even need to raise it just shows their desperation.
