Turnbull to spruik airport security measures

THE threat of a terror attack in Australia has risen, Malcolm Turnbull has warned.
Speaking on 3AW today, the Prime Minister confirmed the recent suicide bombings in Indonesia, which involved children, have potentially increased the local terror risk.
The co-ordinated family attack followed one of Indonesia’s worst acts of terrorism since the 2002 Bali bombings. At least 13 people, including the six members of the family, died in the Surabaya attacks, with a further 41 injured.
Mr Turnbull described the acts as “brutal, inhumane, blasphemous and sickeningly cruel”, expressing solidarity for the victims.
When asked if this increases the terror concern for us, he said “yes”.
“In Indonesia they have ... around 500 people that have returned from the conflict zone,” Mr Turnbull said.
“Of course the bomber, the man who used his family, killed his family in these attacks had not come back from Syria, but nonetheless it is a real challenge.”
“It’s a reminder that these terrorists have got nothing to do with God. They are not defending Islam,” he added, praising President Jojo Widodo for “proving Islam, moderation and democracy are compatible”.
“Now he’s got people who are seeking to undo that in Indonesia. We give him enormous credit for standing up to that, and seeking to maintain that great moderate tradition in Indonesia.”

He said the Australian government was keeping a “very close eye” on the 40 Australians who returned from the conflict zone last year.
“A lot of the Australians who went to fight in the conflict zone will never come back because they’ve been killed, and a number of them won’t come back obviously because they don’t want to end up going to jail here.”
According to The Australian, Mr Dutton said yesterday the terrorism threat to Australia would remain for “our lifetime”.
“As we have seen in Indonesia in the last day or so, the threat of terrorism is with us and will be with us for our lifetime, that is the reality of the threat,” Mr Dutton said. “So we need to make sure we have an assurance about people who are coming into our country, whether it is by plane or by boat, we need to make sure that we are doing everything we can to neutralise that threat.”
