    chuck,
You are entitled to your opinion, and I can understand that those devoted to the practical goals and ideals of the welfare state as usually implimented:
    - free cash at all who dont wish to work or contribute
    - government as nanny for all
    - no individual or personal responsibility for anything, the job of each individual is to sit and wait in line for their handout
    - massive government departments to supervise and adminster all of this, lots of jobs for the boys and girls not only in canberra, but all cities.

and especially those who are very content to be receving their monthly payment from the government, could be a bit upset by the facts of the situation and the real consequences of continuing on this quite foolish path.

However, there are bigger issues at stake here beyond your personal financial situation.

By its nature, the welfare state creates a symbiotic and parastic relationship between the welfare recipients and the administrators and emplyees of the welfare system. Neither can exist without the other and both feed on the existence and expansion of the other.
The administrators become more powerful as the dependents become more helpless.

What you see in the man-made disaster is what happens to a welfare state when the welfare nannies are suddenly gone, and there is no-one left to hand out the candy.
You are right that these people were abandonded, but they were abandoned by the welfare-state nannies.

If we avert our eyes from the realities of the situation when we find the facts of the reality to conflict with what we would like to believe, we are doing our communities and the future for ourselves and our children an extreme dis-service.

chuck, isnt it time for you to put aside your personal axe to grind, your polical agenda, your personal financial stake in the welfare state, for the greater good?
