If you are talking about strength of a business, a company makes a profit one year and a loss the next it could be for many reasons, more interested in the reasons than just raw numbers. Amazon failed to make a profit for many years but was a wise investment.
Seems like lots of threads all on same subject. Could mods perhaps merge all these together - they are all on same topic no?

Is that how you calculate compound returns?

You bought NEA in year one for $1.
In year 2, the price was $3. [return on capital is 200%]
In year 3 the thing is back at $2. [You still say your return on capital is 100%. However, that is not compounding?]
