Chiefs call for Ona, Kabui to reconcile
CHIEFS of Bougainville under the arm of Fellowship of Reconciliation are finalising plans to get President-elect Joseph Kabui and Me’ekamui king Francis Ona to reconcile.
The fellowship is made up of chiefs throughout the island who have been instrumental in getting leaders on Bougainville in different factions to reconcile after the crisis.
Spokesman for the group and Halia paramount chief Herman Halihu said the group was focused on the reconciliation of Bougainville’s two most respected leaders.
Mr Halihu said Mr Kabui and Mr Ona haven’t reconciled yet and it was their task to make sure they both reconciled for the betterment of the peace process and the future of the people.
“Our next task ahead is to get these two leaders (Mr Kabui and Mr Ona) to reconcile and I am positive we can achieve that because we’ve come a long way already and there’s no turning back,” Mr Halihu said. The arrangements have come amid the winding down of the autonomous Bougainville government elections and with the inauguration of Mr Kabui and members of the First House of Representatives scheduled for June 15.
Mr Halihu, on behalf of the chiefs, praised Mr Ona and his Me’ekamui supporters for respecting the elections to go ahead without any disturbances.
Meanwhile, he also saluted all the contestants — both the winners and losers — and candidates on Bougainville for the quiet and peaceful election outcome.
“I am very pleased there was no argument, fighting throughout the region of Bougainville during the time of campaigning and counting. Most campaigning were clean and people showed their real desire for their leaders through their votes in the ballot boxes,” said Mr Halihu, who was a losing candidate for the Halia constituency. Mr Halihu is a vocal peace campaigner and believes the time has come for the elected leaders to work together and strengthen the cause for lasting peace.
He acknowledged the younger generation who have stepped up to be counted in the first ABG elections which resulted in some of them receiving overwhelming support from voters.
Mr Halihu also paid tribute to his “grandson”— Patrick Nisira, winner of his Halia constituency in Buka and all other winning and losing candidates — including the presidents’ seat for a trouble free election.
Mr Halihu, on behalf of all the chiefs, challenged all Bougainvilleans to stand up, be united and move forward with the establishment of the first government.
