i think youre ignoring the fact that this and rio's strategic alliance with bhp in a jv is much more value accretive than the deal with chinalco would have been. it is a positive outcome for those who are willing to hold for the long term.
again, if you are unhappy with it you could just sell your rio shares and the rights once they become traded.
