My niece has two and both are highly trained, clean, intelligent, use a litter box, and are very affectionate.
I've killed possibly 100s in my life as in the wild they are vermin, but if trained as a domestic pet and if they are porperly cared for, they are umpteen times better than any rabbit, mouse or guinea pig for example.
