I saw the Southern Lights (Southern Aurora) from our own home in the Strathbogie Ranges sometime in the mid 80s.
I was up late and went outside and saw a magnificent 'sheen' over a wide area of the Southern sky.
Colours changing from green, to mauve, yellow, etc, slowly melding/ merging.
It was so spectacular, I woke the family up and we watched in the cold for a while.
Quite an experience and didn’t even have to leave home.
I consider we were very fortunate that the conditions were so ideal.
