The federal government has announced plans for a $43b spend on a fibre-to-the-home broadband network

The government will set up a new company, in which it will have a majority stake, to build the network.

Initially the government will inject $4.7b but expects to invest $43 billion, along with the private sector, over eight years.

Construction is scheduled to start early next year.
The government will then sell down its network interests within five years of completion.

This means the previous NBN proposal - from which Telstra had been excluded - has now been wiped off the agenda.

TLS, with which SSM is strongly aligned, is now free to participate in the new network.

From SSM's perspective, as one of two key contractors for TLS alongside Leighton, this is a clear opportunity to win new work over several years. SSM training division, Milcom, has recently been accredited by TLS for training up staff to do fibre connections, enabling SSM to build up a workforce with the required skills to role out this broadband network.
