Interestingly I was at a FINSIA presentation yesterday and one comment that struck me is that the reason we still have cards is because of MasterCard would not allow issuers to use the MC network unless there is a card involved (even if it is a digital card that we all have on our phones).
Apparently, this was one of the major reasons why ApplePay was three years overdue and they eventually folded to MC demands. I imagine that at some point MC will have to fold and allow purely app payment without digital cards.
