When the market is advised of recent MAJOR "deals" with CBS (Viacom), IAC's ASK and what appears to now be The New York Times, many feel that LOOK will "take off", absolutely, NO DOUBT !!!!

Check the bottom right hand side of this page !!!!

The market is also NOT aware of existing (& possibly) expanded "other" deals with the likes of Proquest, Ziff Davis, Meridith newspapers/magazines along with Highbeam research, & even Murdoch may very well "come to the party" in the next week or, two with a NEWS involvement !!! - (Plus, MSN are now said to have an interest, too!!)

Some notes (below, from a 'private' LOOK discussion Google Group, board) seemed to have had this yet to be announced (The NY Times) move covered, some time back!!!

From my notes on the Group Board, (8/05/2005), follow this analogy made at the time:

< Much conjecture (since, on Yahoo board) has been had, guessing, just who this Major Media Co will be. I now have reason (at times) to feel that it could even be the New York Times. (some reasons, are as follows):

(Simon, they also have, or, have had "savethis.com working on their site !!)

< NY Times unveiled a new product called "TimesFile". SearchBlog's John Battelle describes it as follows,

"- TimesSelect includes something called "TimesFile", a sort of Furl for the NYT.com. I'd like it to be for the entire web, with a NYT filter of sorts." >

And ..... "According to Nielsen, unique visitors [to the NYT's website] as of March 2005
were 10.4 million. Assuming 300,000 TimesSelect users, the NYT would earn roughly $15 million in incremental annual revenue." [May.17, 05]

Yes ... We are getting "Hotter" with this (following) UPDATE to that (John Battelle) report.

Sounds a lot like what WAS said in the CC, (post Q1) in relation to 'some backfill suppliment', for the Major Media Co, Looksmart (CEO David Hills) has said they have signed. The reference to ... "an affiliate program, so the 'long tail' can create a revenue stream for itself.", almost spells it out. (I personally love that 'long tail' aspect!!). And that ...." and, through an affiliate network, extend that to their base and they can make money on the backend off that." (See below, in update).

UPDATE: Rick Stratton points me to this at Paid Content (Link below): Quoting Martin Nisenholtz: (A chief of NYT's) "We also hope to roll out an affiliate program so the long tail can create a revenue stream for itself. If you're a blogger who uses a lot of Times Op-Ed content in your blog you can continue to do so (by subscribing to TimesSelect)... and,
through an affiliate network, extend that to their base and they can make money on the backend off that. We think the blogosphere needs more revenue streams."

IMHO, I think we can almost "Welcome aboard" the NYT (I said at the time of my E Mail, Simon) and (in due course) the est. 300,000 "TimeSelect" users, (as "savethis" has now vanished from the "FREE" articles section of the NYT's, the last time I checked), I'm now assuming it will be utilised, only, in the 'subscibe' part, only) who will then be (hopefully) "Furling" on a share basis, with LookSmart's own [200,000 est.], Furl.Net users. .... " and, through an affiliate network, (is what the NYT's executive said - above) extend that to their base and they can make money on the backend off that."

J.P. Morgan Securities thinks it will reflect well on the bottomline (for the NYT's): "This step will also help the publishers 'test the waters' and determine how much revenue they can capture from the existing, largely unpaid online audience," the broker clients.

"According to Nielsen, unique visitors [to the NYT's website] as of March 2005 were 10.4 million. Assuming 300,000 TimesSelect users, the NYT would earn roughly $15 million in incremental annual revenue." [May.17, 05]

We were pretty close to the mark at the time, I must say!!!
