This trade war is a smoke screen for US late in the realization China is threatening their monopoly on global super power status untouchable. The issue is not those deficits and low tech jobs BUT tech and 5G. China is getting the drift and probably have been anticipating the different scenarios of events by US and their strategy of managing this development. It was unlike them to reveal their hand so soon (Made in China 2025) so I detect some cockiness or confidence that the puzzles of their plan to dominate new tech once those low tech have been conquered and exploited.
Challenging the dominance of USD reserve status is a very dangerous aspiration indeed. I have long ago thought of such scenario and that HK social problem does smells odd by the commitments of the protesters and I am sure some will be looking towards the western border across to Tibet and possible Xinjiang as another strategic card to play and possibly Taiwan too.
