Spoke to an old timer today ( local fellow as am I) that worked this mine years ago. He told me about the shaft that filled up with water. A geologist told them whilst drilling, they were about to enounter other old mining works but said they had about 15m left to go. When the drilling machine was turned off they would listen and could hear the ground creaking at times.
After drilling only 1.5 m the water broke through and he said it went off like a bomb frightening the crap out of them. The force of the water drove the drill bit backwards and the hole rapidly expanded forcing them to leg it out of there with the water following them up.
That shaft meets up with the bottom end of the Challenger mine ( and other old diggings) where he reckons the best gold deposits lay.
Along the walls of that shift he said that he observed gold veins ranging from the size of a match stick up to 1 inch in size.
He told me they had 3 pumps going and pumped approx 27 million litres of water out. They got it down eventually and kept the water at bay but when they stopped working the shaft it filled back up again. This was several years ago, possibly 10 or more.
I know this old timer well and I take him on his word as he has no reason to make this up and enjoys talking about his mining days.
