I want to introduce yet again the only transitional ICE platform of merit.
First, this transitory platform is NOT ICE-dominant like MICE, which are a piss-poor excuse for Big Auto to keep pumping out big stinkers.
The transitionary (First Captain ausheds' third word for same) platform is an EV with full traction drive, a small battery and a range extending ICE
What exactly are the requirements for the ICE-to-EV transitional or transitionary platform?
There's only really two:
(1) Must begin addressing CC goals to decarbonize (i.e., the smallest ICE possible)
(2) Must have a small battery (but as large as currently sustainable)
There will not be enough big lithium ion batteries for all cars to be pure electric BEV for many years; the number of years it takes to get sufficient battery production for fully 100% BEV sales is one measure of the transitional period automakers need to cover; unlikely less than 10 years, but not more than 20.
That's a lot of cars in the meantime that need power and only gasoline and biofuels will be able to provide that power.
My guesses: The transitional ICE-to-EV vehicle will have a one- or two-cylinder internal combustion engine which runs only at its top thermal efficiency and perhaps only as needed to keep a right-sized EV battery in the proper charge range (20-80%). The ICE will be less than 1-L displacement.
Again, this platform has been discussed numerous times by me and others (not by any of our bloviating Little Luddites though) and is called a range-extended EV. There are very few out there in the wild yet, but they are coming AS PART OF THE EV REVOLUTION.
India, Africa, South and Central America are regions where the immaturity of the electrical grid is likely to further extend the period that we need range-extended EVS because even when there's enough lithium, there might be paucity of electrons in certain locations. The ICE will die but it will not and should not be an ignominious death in my opinion; I have worked on ICEs all my life, built and rebuilt many and I love the sounds and smells, but I am also supremely logical.
The range-extended EV. The only acceptable solution for ONLY as long as we must have personal auto ICE.
The range-extended EV platform can address all vehicles, but mostly they are most suitable as smaller lighter mass-produced vehicles.
A range-extended electric drive vehicle is just as relevant to Lynas as a BEV, but it still doesn't really need to be tracked.
imho, Lynas investor need only track full BEVs as their primary proxy for the EV Revolution, and that number has been easy to track.
I suspect we will see further refinements of the Toyota Yaris range-extended EV system (or very similar) installed in millions of light duty vehicles with and without Toyota branding with and without four wheels. More opinion than guess, as the logic and math are sound and the options very few. Pretty much this has to get done.
