Given most things in nature have a log-normal distribution, rather than a normal distribution, comparisons should be made to the median value not the mean value (average). The poor understanding of statistics by the general public is truly shocking and a reason why "experts" can so easily manipulate public opinion but they have a much harder time manipulating academia.
