Mining jobs are still there if you go the right way about getting one.
Here in Qld, mining's lost approx 22,000 jobs over the last 2-3 years, and the mining co my son worked for went into liquidation after being persecuted by the Labor govt here. Anyway, he finished about 6 months ago, received redundancy, sat home for a month and applied for jobs with mixed success. He did however turn down 2 jobs, one in Ayr and the other in Gladstone because he thought he was worth more money and his wife wouldn't move from Brisbane. With some gentle prodding, he decided to take a 6 month contract in Darwin and lived the Australian dream while getting paid for it. He kept applying for jobs and four months into the contract, he scored one in Brisbane for 40 g more than his previous job. Hubby has just returned from accompanying him on his road trip back to Brisbane and he starts work first week in December. Yes, it was an upheaval for him, but employers tend to choose a candidate who is currently working in the industry, has gone out of his comfort zone, and above all, who is resilient. It took a lot of plain talking from us to get him to Darwin, but the networking was invaluable and in his words, took his his resume up to the next level. Jobs are there if you go the right way about it.
