No probably not normal for a back surgeon to deal with COVID patients but where do you think they put the patient once the surgery is done? ICU?
I imagine they would have to have enough critical care beds, and the relevant number of staff, to care for these patients and rehabilitate them after surgery.
I'm not a medical expert but I would have thought most major surgery requires intensive care afterwards. Even if not they would still need to allow for adverse outcomes post surgery.
