As I alluded to yesterday, I will pass on another piece of information which should make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. This was attached to the program for the KCCG meeting on Tuesday night.

Of particular note are the extrordinary levels of Benzene which they claim were recorded. They claim levels of 84 and / or 45ppb benzene. I think they are getting confused with Toluene levels recorded & in which case the Australian Standard is 800 ppb. To my knowledge, the actual levels recorded were not even remotely close to what has been circularised. Everyone in attendance on the night would have been given a copy of this misleading information & now their minds would be poisoned against Cougar's activities here. Little doubt they would be telling their friends as well. KCCG you just have to get your facts right!

Perhaps we should email DERM attention John Bradley, Stephen Robertson Minister for Mines & Energy, Dorothy Pratt Member for Nanango, other Parliamentarians & South Burnett Regional Council Mayor David Carter, & ask the validity of the KCCG claims.

Further I feel that Len should contact DERM & request that:

1. Derm immediately issue a press release refuting the claims by the KCCG & present the actual levels recorded

2. Have DERM update Stephen Robertson Minister for Mines & Energy

3. Derm should also immediately update the information on their website

4. Derm should also immediately contact the KCCG

5. Derm should also immediately contact Dorothy Pratt Member for Nanango

6. Derm should also immediately contact David Carter South Burnett Regional Council Mayor

7. Derm should immediately lift the ban on the cartage of water from the spring outside the exclusion zone.

8. Derm should immediately lift the ban on the use of farm bores within the exclusion zone.

Further, Len should request of the KCCG, an apology to himself, the company & their employees - including those sacked. Len, should also request KCCG to issue a press release apologising for misrepresenting the facts.

1. Join KCCG to get updates and correspondence.

2. Donate $10 and get your own 'UCG is Toxic" core flute sign for your front fence, business or farm gate. This worked wonders at Traveston Dam. If everyone does it, you are not a dork!

1. Learn about UCG so you can speak about it authoritatively.

2. Tell others about it.

3. Write a letter to your Superannuation fund asking if your money is invested in companies with UCG interests. Proforma letter attached.

4. Write a letter to Minister Stephen Robinson asking him: (Robertson spelt wrong)

. Why he allowed a mining lease under 300 of our local Kingaroy houses and
businesses, our Memorial Park, TAFE and State Schools?
And why the local residents are never consulted about such issues?

. Where did the 84 and / or 45 ppb benzene sample come from?

. What was the benzene level in water at Linc Energy and Carbon energy's site one day after test burning and directly in the burn cavity?

. Do we have and Environmental Protection Agency in this State, and if so, why haven't they protected the environment in Kingaroy?

. What was DERMs best estimate of benzenes levels in the Plantation bore had the trial been allowed to continue until 20,000 tonnes of coal been had been burnt as approved
by DERM?

. Cougar's permit states that they have to rehabilitate their site. How do you repair a water aquifer 180m underground? Has it ever been done?

I corrected a number of obvious mistakes in the document.


The following text is from a press release which was also part of the handout.

"The comtamination threat posed to the town is obvious. After only a few tonnes of coal were burnt at the Cougar Plant, benzene contamination levels reached the maximum allowable levels for drinking water. Had the plant continued with its permitted trail of 20 000 tonnes the contamination levels would have been proportionately higher."
