In the west australian news papers they have been running a series of stories comparing Perth to Vancover, it mentioned that perth has the most KM of roads per capita of any city in the world while in vancover they have spent stuff all on building roads for decades, they are in fact removing roads

    https://au.news.yahoo.com/thewest/a/24789713/cars-come-last-in-transport-planning/

The road system in Perth was designed over 50 years ago and as the urban sprawl has continued the short sighted solution has been to build more roads.

The urban sprawl makes in difficult and expensive to provide public transport. In higher density cities a bus or tram will pick up a dozen passengers every 100m or so, through the suburbs of Perth buses don't pick up that many passanger over 1 km

While the train line along the freeway has been effective getting people in and out of the city we have the stupid situation that people have to drive to the train station so parking has to be provided because it is too difficalt/expensive to provide bus services that can get people from close to there homes to the train station or other destinations.
