The President speaks: the 2011 economic projects are numerous
In his address the Head of State made a big impression on some critical minds in our society. He said, for instance, that he will tackle the problems of energy headlong which, in itself, is not new but when he says he will revive all energy files its becomes an issue.
The development of the economy has, to a large extent, been stifled by the lack of sufficient energy; and, should this therefore become a major preoccupation, like it is for agriculture and communication infrastructure, then the foundation for making Cameroon an emerging economy is being laid, in earnest.
Apart from the projects known too well by most Cameroonians, the Head of State shortlisted a couple of others that will also be of concern to him in 2011.
The revival of agricultural production through the stimulation of food crops is one of them. He knows that such production has been constrained in the past by problems of communication infrastructure with the startling absence of farm to market roads thwarting all attempts to make better the production situation.
In the same vain, cash crop farming which for 20 years suffered seriously when prices plummeted with farmers bearing most of the brunt, shall be encouraged especially as world market prices are now improving.
Expert knowledge that export-oriented industrial agriculture in Cameron is largely untapped and so investing in such as the President says, he will this year, will not only generate opportunities for the huge army of the unemployed but with create wealth and speed up the quest for poverty alleviation.
He aims to develop processing industries, focusing on timber, certain agricultural products, light metallurgy, mining and primary processing.
Both the most of these plans will be in vain should energy remain a nagging problem reason why the President is determined to revive all energy files that have been in abeyance for too long; so too does he intern to resurrect the issue of low cost housing which has led to unacceptable abuses.
