Looking at the price of electricity here in Victoria, it can't be long before it will be cheaper to go off the grid. I keep doing back of the envelope calculations that suggest it would be captital neutral or even profitable to have my own solar PV or thermal power plant for a complete 24hr power supply. The problem is sizing it large enough to cope with the short hours in winter coupled with multiple overcast days and keeping it profitable. Otherwise just have a petrol/grid backup and hang the cost for the few days.

I suspect the powers that be would outlaw this option very quickly.
