Nuclear is the safest form of baseload energy per kW available.
Coal kills thousands a year just in China alone from mining accidents and Hundreds of thousands more from the after effects of the polution it spreads.
Not much media coverage but I read somewhere that 1800 villagers were wiped out when a dam burst at a hydroelectric power plant as a result of the Fukushima earthquake.
Oil...deep water oil spill. Need I say more.
No energy source is perfect and we need them all if we are to continue our way of living.
The safety of older Nuclear plants should however be reassessed to take into consideration the unpredictability of Mother Nature or should be replaced with Gen 3 reactors which have passive cooling abilities.
