This is similar to the English word 'day' which can be 12hrs,24hrs or an indefinite time period such as in the expression 'in the olden days',or 'back in my Grandfather's day.'
That in the Genesis account yohm = a long time/the time covering an extraordinary event can be seen by comparing Genesis ch 1 where the six creative days are spoken of with Genesis 2:4 where those same time periods are said to be "in the day(singular)that Jehovah God made earth and heaven."
