I agree that AI has the potential for social and economic upheaval. AI can write biographies and create documentaries that are arguably better than people can produce. The downside is that opinions and "facts" may not be controlled.
There are a lot of other examples.
I remember the social and economic upheavals that the computer age introduced. Jobs to manage company transactions shrank, and those that survived required different skills. My mother wrote a narrative of her life. She used a pen and paper, and I'm doing the same with the aid of a word processor and a word and grammar checker. This app, as it is now called, also gives suggestions to make what I write clearer.
In the 60s and 70s, I wrote and used simulation programs for things like nuclear reactions to assessing mining prospects. These simulation programs greatly increased the quality of the mining and nuclear industries. I believe these simulation programs are a precursor to AI, which I believe is still in its infancy. Right now, we only have a vague idea of its impact, which makes the Pope's warning more pertinent still.
I don't believe that AI needs to be bad. It depends on how we use it and how we treat those who are negatively impacted by it.
Will we succumb to greed or to compassion?
OK, I'm a pathological optimist.
We live in "interesting times".
