The 'per capita' argument is just plain silly, and does nothing for the credibility of those who quote it.
Of course as a major exporter of mining products we are going to have a high per capita output. But lets take it a bit further. Rather than per capita for the whole country, why not per capita for, say, Brisbane, or Tom Price, or Darwin? In some places, say, Woolongong, the per capita rate would be off the scale, but what does that tell us? Absolutely nothing.
The only number that matters is the total, and that's about 1.5% of world total.
But what really saddens me is what I saw last night on TV news. Farms and families in the Victorian mallee that are still flooded, hurting badly, and in a disastrous situation, even as the Feds in Canberra blah on in petty childish point scoring on matters that are about number 247 on the scale of importance.
