Ah - this is another one which I've begun to doubt...

There was a move toward the de-politicisation of monetary controls for good reason. This fact is unquestionable - but I'm off to bed and won't argue for it now.

It's just a shame that this attempt at de-politicisation has led to many believing that its independence is there to serve an elite. Whether this is true or not, I don't know. Even if it is, it doesn't change the need to keep monetary control out of the hands of politicians. The question becomes how to keep it in the hands of those that truly serve the greater good?
