To answer your question, here in Canberra we don't need to buy a modem if we are connected to the Transact optical cable(our answer in the war against Telstra). They supply a Motorola set top box which has a bulit in broadband modem.
However I do have a D-Link router...
No Netcomm stuff other than the handy dandy modem I just bought for the fax...
