Nothing stops a discussion and tossing a few numbers around with alternate suppliers.The exclusive arrangement meant they couldn't sign an agreement with anyone else. Doesn't mean they can't tyre kick or chew on some hypotheticals. I mean do things like mergers just happen in an instant before announcement? Obviously there has to be preliminary discussions. So to have something "up the sleeve", meaning people have investigated alternative possibilities but just not signed contracts, appears to me to be quite plausible.
