ALDI does not, and never has, any claim to be a full line supermarket. The impact they have already had just underscores the poor management at Woolies and Coles. Luckily for Coles and Woolies our market is really too small for a truly powerful competitor to spend capital on starting a new chain here. They would only do so by acquisition of an existing group here and believe me the blowtorch they would apply to the cost structures of existing organisations would be excruciating. Drastic shock treatment is needed to change the existing company culture and snap them out of their complacency and arrogance to their customers. Then the Return on assets employed would be what it should be.
Shareholders in Woolies are ill served by a management that cannot realise the true value of the company assets which is their store distribution and remaining goodwill.
