When I read your OP I felt sorry for you because I think that people of retirement age, who've slugged it out for years and now getting by on Cortisone because their back is knackered are getting a bit of a raw deal to say the least.

Sure - their is a temptation to try to pull yourself out of losses by taking on punts that have "blue sky" potential (but massive risk in fine print) but it didn't work for Nick Leeson and it probably won't work for you.
When the CEO of BP, Shell, Exxon, Gazprom, OPEC leaders aren't picking it or predicting wildly different things - I'd sit this one out and let it play out.
