People who vote will vote for a whole party not just the leaders vision, you could see some hesitation in some party members before the last election, when Chris Bowen said if you don't like the policy don't vote Labor, wasn't just seen as arrogance, it was also perceived as a lack of faith because it's an answer that says I can't be bothered anymore which is frustration, this was probably interpreted as a lack of confidence.
If those beliefs are not shared with voters then a party may lose, that's what happened at the last election.
