The presentation was excellent. The work by Professor Felsher highlights the thesis of oncogene addiction which he states has profound implications for how you think about developing cancer drugs.
Felsher makes the point that the immune system is essential for sustained tumor regression upon Myc inactivation. The first priority is to turn off Myc. When Myc is inactivated, the immune system is required to sustain tumor regression and clear the body of tumors. The work by Felsher highlights the problem with the current approach to cancer treatments. The tumor is attacked while aberrant Myc continues to command the tumor to keep growing.
The work also highlights the fact that the first Myc inhibitor will be a paradigm shift in cancer treatment. If Felsher is correct with his thesis, a Myc inhibitor will revolutionise cancer treatment. The one-two punch will be a Myc inhibitor in combination with immuno-oncology treatments to aid the immune system to clear tumors.
