yes, we need senators who are NOT tied to a party's political stance. We need senators who will vote on the merits of the issues involved. This is the kind of senators we need in the senate to check and balance any excessive zeal of the government of the day.
Some here think that the Senate should just be a rubber stamp for the House of Representatives, they don't understand our Commonwealth Constitution. The senators were never meant to be the yes men and women of the government of the day, though so many who belonged to the governing party had behaved that way.
