The entities, that are shorting ASM with borrowed shares would also hold a substantial number of shares outright as a hedge against their short selling going wrong. I believe, that at times they trade these shares to further obfuscate their nefarious price manipulating activities. Over the next few days I would not be surprised to see short sold shares dropping back to, or under, 5 million shares while the share price continues to be hammered by the algorithmic trading.
