To be clear, my grandkids (and kids) don't get a cent of anything until I am gone and even then it is under the custodianship of a testamentary trust. All of them know their family's modest heritage as immigrants to this country. You know the one, my parents had only the clothes on their back and a suitcase in their hands..
Many here, including myself, grew up dirt poor but were offered the opportunity of an education and had the determination to succeed with it. That grit came from my parents, then to me and now lives on in 50% of my children, but not all. My kids had an absent dad, which I regret, but they had to bear the brunt and humilty of a bankruptcy, from my poor selection of business partners and a life threatening illness. Few lives are lived without trials and every life has its own story.
I am not into privilege, a soft life or a school tie. I was belted for even thinking it, back in the day. As a God fearing Catholic, I try to give to those less fortunate than me. I am far from being a saint, but nor am I cold to the needs of others.
If the 4th generation is soft, I won't be able to change it and I won't be around to see it. I do not envy any child of this time as the world is a very different place to the one I loved.
Whether I am in a better place or not..... I prefer not to dwell on. Just as I don't dwell on the bottom line of anything material.
