Major new details of the coalition nuclear policy have just been released.
Opposition LeaderPeter Dutton has pledged to have a nuclear reactor in Australia by the mid-2030's with the proposed policy seeming to have a small modular reactor focus following a meeting he had last week with Rolls Royce SMR.
"This is going to set off the nuclear debate in Australia.
Initially I have a few reactions:
1/ Re. Rolls Royce SMR DesignThe Rolls Royce SMR design is a really cool proposal. I've spoken to people there and learnt about their plan. Whilst most have optimism it will come to fruition, relying on only one design creates tremendous risk.
2/ Re. SMR FocusWhilst SMRs are a good option, we must explore all reactor types: large, small and micro.
3/ Re. Lacking Focus on Legalising NuclearLifting the bans mustn't be tied to the coalition's policy. Any policy is bound to be picked apart. There is a risk our efforts to legalise nuclear power could be dragged down unnecessarily. The bans on nuclear power could (and should) be lifted tomorrow. The government must answer for why they continue to defend 90s era bans which are out of date, out of touch and out of step with the rest of the world. Lifting the bans must always be the first priority."
