Bluescope Steel has a plant near Toledo, Ohio, which is powered by a nuclear energy facility that sits within the built-up surrounds, and as it was reported to me "nobody turns a hair". Manufacturing is essential for employment, of course, but here is a clear case of reality triumphing over mis-placed idealism. So that plant serves as a riposte to all the hype about "green steel" from solar and wind.
Perhaps as our next election looms, we might have a proper public debate about using nuclear energy in Australia. I am heartened by the Labor Party's turnaround on the need for gas "as a transition fuel" (much to the horror of the Greens). Hmm, some funny transition. Or will it be a transition to nuclear?
