The cold-storage works was in Mt Hawthorn.
But bags of frozen salmon head from Hunts
Cannery in Albany (used as Cray Bait) were
worth more (per pound) than the salmon
in tins. When I came back East in 1970
I crewed on a two-man Barrcouta boat
in mid-winter in rowdy Bass Strait.
Here are returning to Queenscliff:
The connection with Albany in WA was the
burley we used to attract barracouta was
pollard and whale-oil. Times change.
The whaling stations at Albany
and Eden in NSW have gone.
But I went Whale Spotting off Iceland
in mid-winter. We saw plenty of
whales so the Skipper shouted
us free drinks at the Mar Bar.
Maritime comes from 'Mar'.
