    If it was made by the monks in the 14th century then no one knows how they did it and many have tried to emulate it without success. The image has a three dimensional quality that one can see in books published by scientists. Current scientific evidence from scientific study of the image says the light image is due to scorching of the shroud material.

    Whether one believes the image of the dead Christ is on the shroud is a purely personal matter. But, strangely enough, there is an enormous amount of detail available. For example, pollen from plants found in Israel have been found in the fabric, burial customs such as a small coin on each eye have been discerned in the image. Forgetting the religious component in it, the whole thing is fascinating. When the first photo was taken in the 1890s all were shocked to see more clearly the body of the man. How could a 14th century monk produce an image that in the 19th century would turn out to be like that in a photograph.
