I am a baby boomer. We were sent to play with the kids next door to get our exposure and immunity to measles, mumps and chicken pox. None of our relatives or our friends kids had ADHD - it was totally unheard off back then. You would have to conclude from this that these diseases and there analogs do not cause ADHD. Therefore, it is has to be the immune response to the vaccines in some individuals that is doing the damage. But how and why???
The latest thinking is that the gut bacteria has much to do with how the immune system behaves. There are 100s, of different bacteria living in the gut. The gut microbiome forms a giant loosely coupled distributed information processing system with more than a trillion processing elements. It has about 150 times more genes (code) than our own genome. The gut is also packed with billions of nerve endings that communicate with the brain. These nerves are very active when you sleep.
No one really knows what is going on when you sleep. But we know that if you cant sleep and the gut can't communicate with your brain, first you loose the ability to process sensory information with your brain and control your muscles, then vital organs shut down and you die. So there is some very impotent information processing and communications going on in the gut that the brain and the immune system needs to know about.
Most understanding of the microbiome and the immune system is coming from agriculture where antibiotics have been in use for some time and the benefits of probiotics are only now becoming realised. Here is a snippet from a recent study titled "Gut Health: The New Paradigm in Food Animal Production"...
In other words, the microbiome is the immune system's communicator, conductor and arbitrator. So the most likely reason why vaccines are harmless to most kids, but devastating (perhaps) to some is because there is something different with their microbiome that causes the immune system to also attack certain developing brain cells which do not recover.
It would be interesting to see if babies delivered by cesarian section get a higher incidence of ADHD because they miss out on getting their mother's microbiome at birth. Growing up in a too clean world and getting no contact with animals would also reduce the bacteria available to the gut. I recently heard a micro-biologist on the radio say: "if you want your kid to be allergy free and have a strong immune system, buy a dog on your way home from the hospital".
