Malaysia launched a vaccination campaign on Borneo Island after confirming a case of polio in a 3-month-old boy Friday—the country’s first case since 1992,AFP reports. Health officials believe the virus was brought in from outside Malaysia, which the WHO declared polio-free in 2000. They note that the infant’s strain of vaccine-derived polio type 1 shares genetic links to the virus found in the Philippines outbreak this past September, according to New Straits Times. Officials launched a vaccination campaign in the baby’s home village, AP reports. Investigations showed 25 out of 204 children aged under 15 years there were unvaccinated against polio. The baby is on respiratory support but has been stabilized.
