At first glance, this image depicting sick children in iron lungs shocks and saddens due to the enormity of the polio problem portrayed in this image. On closer examination, it is clear that the equipment that usually accompanied people using iron lungs, such as tracheotomy tubes and pumps and tankside tables, are not present. This scene was staged for a commercial about polio. It is not historically accurate but is an example of directing the viewer’s response by creating an image that never actually occurred. It is a classic example of propaganda to fulfil an agenda.

As the officialhistorical records and statisticaldata clearly confirms, the policies of mass vaccination of both smallpox and polio actually caused many more outbreaks and far greater deaths than had the diseases run their natural course.
