Istanbul, March 26, 1997...Turkish government leaders assured an Anti-Defamation League (ADL) delegation that their country was committed to democracy, religious tolerance and pluralism and would continue its friendly and long-term relationship with Israel.
"We are opposed to religious extremism and will continue our dialogue with Israel and the Jewish people," Fehim Adak, Minister of State and deputy head of the Refah party, told a visiting delegation of the Anti-Defamation League. Headed by David H. Strassler, ADL National Chairman and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director, the Jewish leaders were in Istanbul and Ankara on an official fact-finding mission during which they expressed concern about increasing anti-Semitic statements in the media and in public statements attacking the Jewish faith and the growth of Holocaust denial.
"Regardless of the regime in power, the Turkish people remain tolerant and friendly toward its Jewish citizens," said Dr. Abdullah Gul, another Minister of State. "Anti-Semitic statements are limited to the fringe. They don't resonate among Turkey's 60 million people."
