I have personally been in the position of commercialising patents and intellectual property several times. Sometimes successfully, sometimes partly, sometimes not. I can tell you right now I wouldn't think twice of giving up shares to the right people in order to successfully commercialise. The patent lists are full of unsuccessful but technically outstanding inventors who have not done this.
