Looks like all of us old geezers respond similarly.

I was given the set of DVDs of the first series as a present otherwise I would never have watched the program. I definitely found it disturbing but then I find all those programs that show what Anthony Burgess called "ültra violence" in his Clockwork Orange (see the movie of same name by Kubrick) in forensic detail disturbing.

That said, I did watch the whole set of DVDs so I must have been sufficiently engaged (or at a loose end)by the program.

I still think the best series made for TV I have seen on DVD is Deadwood.
