I think that if the current impasse continues beyond the end of this week, then next Monday the PM should go to the GG and seek to test the numbers in the House of Reps to see who has the support of the house.

At the end of the day, this may be the only way to determine once and for all who will form a government as long as they have the numbers and enjoy the continued support of the majority of the house.

Should Gillard fail, not having the numbers, Abbott would be called upon or perhaps we could face another election which could decide the matter or worst case scenario, the vote returns the same or similar number and we are back at square one again.
