If they're true to form they'll think about acting about a month into an armed conflict!

UN divided over N Korea's nuclear stand

The United Nations Security Council has failed to agree on a way of dealing with the North Korean nuclear stand-off.

North Korea has now officially withdrawn from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty.

The 15 members of the Security Council have met behind closed doors, but have been unable to agree on a common statement.

They could not even agree on when to resume discussions.

The United States wanted to put pressure on North Korea but China and Russia argued that could inflame tensions further.

It is the first time the UN has discussed the issue since the nuclear crisis began six months ago.

Today, North Korea's withdrawal from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty takes effect.

Yesterday, Pyongyang raised tensions even further by warning Tokyo that it was within striking distance.
