Last month (23 April 2025) applications closed for the Department of Energy Generation III+ Small Modular Reactor Program.

This program allows US based companies to be awarded up to $US 800 million in funds on a 50/50 funding basis by submitting their plans/designs for SMR builds. Submitted plans can be the the range of 50-350mwe. The successful candidate(s) will be advised by end of 2025.

I have previously posted info on this program previously, but it will now be interesting to see if further red tape reduction and fast tracking announced by the White House and DoE in the last week will speed up the decision making process. (remembering one of trumps legacy tick boxes is he wants a working commercial SMR before his term ends....)

The U.S. Department of Energy is reissuing the $900 million Gen III+ SMR solicitation to unleash advanced small modular reactor technology to help grow the supply of affordable and abundant American energy.Funding for this solicitation will be available through two tiers:

Tier 1: First Mover Team Support will provide up to $800M to support up to two first mover teams of utility, reactor vendor, constructor, and end-users/off-takers committed to deploying a first plant while facilitating a multi-reactor, Gen III+ SMR orderbook and the opportunity to work with the National Nuclear Security Administration to incorporate safeguards and security by design into the projects.
Tier 2: Fast Follower Deployment Support will provide approximately $100M to spur additional Gen III+ SMR deployments by addressing key gaps that have hindered the domestic nuclear industry in areas such as design, licensing, supply chain, and site preparation.
